When light travels from water into air, it bends (refracts) at the surface. These bending changes the apparent position of objects underwater, making them look higher than they are and often distorting their shape. In addition, water absorbs and scatters light, especially at longer wavelengths, so the lower parts of a submerged object may be dimmer, blurrier, or even invisible. This artwork stems from my experiences as a pool lifeguard in understanding the hidden dangers of water; how a submerged body can become "invisible" and why vigilance means life.
